On my first-day-of-Spring walkabout I missed this little survivor poking up in the perennial bed. It's a lupin, which I rescued from the bedding plants at the grocery store last spring. It was looking sad and very limp and I didn't hold out much hope for it, but I though my garden would be a better final resting place for it than the dumpster behind Thrifty Foods. I planted it and immediately (I'm talking within hours) the snails ate it right down to the soil line. I guess lupine is exceptionally tasty to snails. Who knew that it was lurking there under the earth, enduring our cold winter, just waiting for a few sunny days in spring to pop out and give it another try. Hopefully the snails will only take their share and not get greedy this year.
Made me think about HOPE. What a great surprise!!

Zee, I think you may be on to something. I think maybe I love to garden because there are so many reminders for me out there that there is always hope.
