Four. FOUR. Seriously...I can hardly believe it.
Adeline is growing and changing so much these days. Even just since the end of preschool in June, I've seen big changes. I wish I could just hit the "pause" button and keep her exactly right HERE for awhile, but instead I will write a long post all about Adeline and precisely what sort of awesome small person she is at four so that I can always look back and remember.
Adeline is 38 inches tall and weighs 30 pounds. She's gained 2 inches and 2 pounds this summer, which is a HUGE growth spurt for her...still tiny though. She LOOKS bigger than she is, and her body is really changing into a "big kids" body. I think she's about to have another sprout up as she's grown a little tummy and that's usually how it goes for her - she gains weight first and then she grows upwards.
Adeline is super super kind to animals, especially her cat Zephyr. She tells me that when she was a toddler she and Zephyr fell in love and got married. She spends a lot of her day hugging him (not his favourite, but he tolerates it), patting him, giving him "check-ups" with her doctor's kit, reading him books and giving him long purr-inducing pats (definitely his favourite).
Adeline wants to be a vet shen she grows up.
Adeline is very into talking about and playing "wedding" lately. She's seen the pictures of my wedding and we've talked about how her Daddy and I fell in love and got married, but it really seems to be something she's thinking about these days. I love that I live in a place that when Adeline is setting up a wedding and there are two grooms or two brides, no conversation has to happen except "Isn't that wonderful that those people are in love and want to be a family forever".
Adeline also likes to play "Princesses taking care of Babies" - it's where you dress up in the princess clothes and take care of the baby dolls. The babies throw up A LOT.
Adeline's favourite television show is "The Doodlebops Rockin' Road Show" right now.
Adeline still loves Tink and all the Tinker Bell movies. Fawn is her favourite because she's an animal talent fairy and she wears orange.
Orange is Adeline's very favourite colour. She has new orange shoes that she is really proud of.
Adeline loves dot-to-dots and can do them up to 30 and she also has an unhealthy obsession with colouring. I'm really trying to get her to draw, but she would always rather colour and if she gets her hands on a colouring sheet she won't do anything else. I do love how she focuses on them for such a long time (often an hour or more), how they are helping her small motor/pen skills and how happy she is when she does them...but she needs to draw. Adeline doesn't like to draw because she thinks she doesn't draw well and she gets frustrated when things don't look like she wants them to. I try and tell her that it takes practice to learn to draw, but so far I haven't convinced her.
Adeline loves to laugh and she especially likes getting silly and wild with her Daddy. She's happy that his foot has healed enough that they can wrestle again.
Adeline has lots of big emotions - when she is happy she is VERY VERY HAPPY and when she is mad...oh my...
Adeline thinks some very deep thoughts about all sorts of things and asks a lot of questions.
Adeline continues to say that her favourite book is the classic "Hand Hand Fingers Thumb". I've been reading this book to her since she was a baby and it's always made her laugh. I think it's the rhythm and rhyme she likes.
Adeline likes to go out to restaurants - especially to Vietnamese restaurants for tofu and to the diner nearher Nana's house for fish and chips. Her restaurant skills are pretty good all in all.
Watermelon is her very favourite food, but she also has a deep love for tofu, any kind of noodle, dumplings and homemade chicken broth (other soup ingredients optional).
Adeline has frequent sleep-overs at her Nana's. She's SO happy that her Nana and her Nana's nice cats moved close to us!
Most days Adeline has a super quick shower, but at least twice a week she has what she calls a "long playing bath". These baths can last more than two hours!
Adeline has a lot of pre-reading skills and she's starting to try to spell. She wrote and illustrated a book for her Nana with lots of ocean creatures and she titled it "SE BOC"... I was pretty impressed that she got that all on her own (In case you can't figure it out "SE BOC" is "SEA BOOK" - pretty close, right?).
Adeline loves to rhyme and will freestyle riff on rhyming sounds for long periods of time.
Adeline's hair is really really long. I'm trying to convince her to have quite a few inches cut off and to grow out her bangs, but she says no.
So far Adeline doesn't really care what she wears, although she does love a dress. She has only two fashion rules: nothing scratchy and all socks must be knee socks and they must be pulled up all the way, even if you're wearing shorts. The "shorts and knee socks" battle is just not worth fighting, so I'm deciding to see it as a retro seventies kind of fashion statement and just go with it.
Adeline very rarely sleeps in pajamas anymore. It's been a hot summer and it's less laundry for me!
Adeline is a great sleeper. Looking back to when she was a baby, who would have ever thought I would say that! She goes up to bed willingly, falls asleep on her own after book time and most days she still happily naps in the afternoon.
Adeline has been super-extra-affectionate for the last little while. So many hugs and kisses and gentle touches along with declarations of love and smooshy feelings.
Adeline's favourite toys are vintage fisher price little people, baby dolls, animal figures and puzzles and she loves to "tinker" (make projects out of our recycling).
Adeline says she's going to be a "brave knight with a big feather" for Halloween. Or maybe a noodle.
It's hard to get Adeline excited about going outside, but once we're there she loves to swing, jump on the trampoline, and hang from the frame of the glider. She is always in a much better mood once she's been out to move her body.
Adeline talks a lot about when she's a grown up. She's going to have a rainbow cat, a snake who sleeps in her bed named Annabelle, a baby girl named Isabella and an orange car. Sometimes she tells me that she's going to grow baby Isabella in her uterus and sometimes she says that she is going to adopt her baby. When asked who will be the baby's Daddy she tells me that David will or maybe she'll marry "some boy, but he has to be silly like Daddy". Adeline says she's going to wear lots of make up and have orange and pink hair, but maybe only when she's a teenager. She's going to live close to us so that we can visit all the time and she'll cook us dumplings for supper and then we'll watch grown up tv together and I can pat her rainbow cat. It's fun to think of what Adeline will be like as an adult!
Adeline talks ALL DAY LONG. She always has. Probably always will.
I asked Adeline to fill in the blank - "Adeline is a _________ girl". Her first response was "Adeline is a loving girl" (so true) and her second was "Adeline is a loud girl" (also so true).
We're working on turning down the squealing. Yikes.
Adeline is an extreme extrovert and she really needs other people and especially other children around.
Adeline's best friend and her other best friend are both moving on to kindergarten in the fall, while Adeline is still at preschool. I know she will have no trouble making new friends and some of her other friends will be returning to preschool, but she's actually very sad about not seeing her besties all the time anymore. I love that Adeline has so many friends and that she is so well liked by everyone at preschool.
Adeline's new job is to unload and put away the cutlery from the dishwasher and to help load and unload the rest of the dishes. She is SUPER PROUD of herself.
