My Mom gave me two beautiful plump amaryllis bulbs for Christmas and I have their pots on the kitchen table, trying to get them to soak up as much of this weak winter light as they can. They seem slower than usual to get started, but then we really haven't seen the sun since they were planted. We've had endless gloomy skies and almost constant rain, so I'd rather be hibernating inside a nice cozy bulb than taking a chance on growing too. They're just starting to show some green tips now and I'm already anticipating how happy seeing them grow and flower is going to make me. When I can't be out in the garden I really appreciate having these in the house to remind me that spring will come and that the world will grow and bloom again. Don't even suggest houseplants as a solution to get my green fix. I can grow anything in the yard and I can force bulbs or start seeds indoors but I immediately kill all houseplants. IMMEDIATELY.
