It's a very low-key birthday for the man I adore this year. We had hoped to have a great dinner at our usual celebratory spot, but alas, it wasn't to be. It's a popular place and we hoped calling them up a week in advance would get us a cosy table for two on a Friday night, but we weren't too surprised when they had nothing available. Disappointed, but not surprised. So instead of a wonderful, romantic, inspired and oh-so-tasty meal in a fine restaurant (which as a double extra bonus I didn't have to cook or clean up after) David has requested his favourite meal for dinner - french toast and bacon. Now I make a great french toast if I do say so myself, but it does seem like going from one extreme to another. I made him french toast and bacon for his birthday breakfast last year, but this year he wants it for dinner and for breakfast I'm making him grown-up pop tarts (chocolate pastries/pain au chocolat) for breakfast. I can't remember if I've ever written a post with the recipe for these before. Have I? I tried to look back through the archives, but I couldn't find anything. They're stupendously easy and something you can keep in the freezer, stumble out of bed and pop in the oven and wow your loved ones (or yourself) with dessert breakfast in under 30 minutes. David's other request was for chocolate cupcakes with a lemon filling and vanilla buttercream and could I make them for Thursday so he could enjoy them at work on the day before his birthday as well as on his big day? Cupcakes were provided, warm chocolate pastries were devoured before work and tonight there will be french toast, a few presents and the last of the cupcakes. A simple birthday, but a sweet one.
As long as I get some sugar in my belly and some time with my sweet wife, it'll be an awesome birthday!

Grown-up pop tart recipe sounds really good! If you have the time and inclination I would love it.
Happy, happy birthday dad-to-be!
(Way to go sweet wife!)

VERY belated happy birthday!!!! I can just imagine how wonderful Lisa's french toast and bacon would be. Incidentally, we had the same thing for dinner on your birthday- Shawn says it is a bazar coincidence...
